5 Ways To Check Out Your Next Employer
When I work with displaced candidates, what I hear most from them when I ask what they want in a company is usually what they don’t want. Candidates often forget that the job interview is as much about them interviewing the company as it is about being interviewed for a position. How do we interview a company and determine if it is the right fit?
Online. Use your Linked In connections and search under the Advanced Search option for people to talk to and the Companies tab for company profiles. You can also search discussion boards by company alumni to see what they’re saying. Keep in mind, though, that “alumni” often only share one point of view, and it’s not typically positive.
Search local media. Communities and local media love to profile their darlings. See what the local business and community newspapers are saying about your target company, talk to the Chamber of Commerce, and ask around at networking events.
Just ask. When you’re interacting with the recruiter or hiring manager, ask questions about the company culture, company challenges, position/department challenges, and their opinions. Read between the lines and keep an eye on body language.
Get the skinny from your circle. Check with friends, family and colleagues to see if they know anything about your potential new employer. These connections may also lead you to a direct connection with the company from their networks.
Your gut. Listen closely because it will not lead you wrong (unlike your heart or head). Everything else is just context.
